We do Interaction Engineering

RE:Lab, from drawing to driving

Founded in 2004, RE:Lab is now a leader in the design, development, and evaluation of Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI).

Starting from scratch or from an existing HMI, our unique approach turns a concept into a working solution, ready to go in production. It’s a process that we called Interaction Engineering: HMI, from drawing to driving. The three main pillars of RE:Lab’s Interaction Engineering are: a wide set of HMI services, enabling HMI products, and RE:Search, our research and development unit. Our company’s culture is User-Centred and User-Experience driven.

RE:Lab HMI Services
Interaction design, User Experience (UX), Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE)

We offer a full set of services to co-create, design, and verify our customer’s HMI, to make their products fully functional, cool, and effective.
In 15+ years of experience, we adopted and developed hundreds of tools from Interaction design, User Experience (UX), and Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) assessment frameworks.
Our mantra: Users first!

HMI prototyping

We designed a high-fidelity HMI prototyping framework to display how HMI will work in real-life: appropriate context, same look-and-feel, same functionalities! If you want an interface for an oven, we need to let you taste the cake you can cook with it, using our HMI!
We are model-based too. Whatever we develop as a prototype is not thrown away and can be used automatically in the final product.

HMI coding and development

And what about coding? Yes, we do code! We use software frameworks targeting embedded platforms, PC-Mac-Linux computers, and connected IoT-based Apps working on Android, iOS, and multiplatform web Apps. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Apple Home kit: no secrets for us!

ISOBUS Stack

How do you feel about having agricultural implements as easy to use as USB sticks? “Plug and play” implements, to be attached to agricultural tractors! A farmer’s dream and a business opportunity! ISOBUS is the way to do it: it’s a protocol that makes this plug and play experience possible. RE:Lab has a widely used stack – a software library – which allows tractors and implements to become compatible with the ISOBUS protocol.

DQuid: a world of IoT

Cool product with a nice HMI? It’s even nicer to have it bundled with a connected app! How? DQuid is the definitive bridge between the digital and the physical world. An easy to use Internet of Thing (IoT) Platform that RE:Lab brings to you, after years of R&D. DQuid connects smartphones to your vehicles, machinery, appliances, and makes it possible to remote control and monitor every system.

The HMI Box

Do you have a User Interface that you want to show, test, validate on an existing product, or on a physical prototype before the production? Is it hard to find easy to use off-the-shelf solutions to do so? We know very well that production-ready HMI devices are not flexible enough to be used as prototypes!
RE:Lab’s HMI box is what you need! What? Yes, all the HMI in a BOX.
An embedded hardware ready to show and let you interact with the most magnificent User Interfaces you have ever done.

RE:Search

RE:Search in interaction: our research and development.

Interaction is an endless evolving stream. We stay tuned with all innovations that appear in the world of interactive technologies, novel methods for assessing users’ behaviors, and new products and services which show remarkable HMIs.

R&D Projects and fundraising

Since the beginning, we invested a lot to create an amazing team to look for research grants and big international research funding initiatives. We did it. We have one of the most proficient fundraising teams in Europe on HMI topics. We are always ready to engage with new initiatives, launching ideas. We have super solid expertise in writing research proposals for grants, and then leading, and managing projects. Finally, to support the industrial deployment of research outcomes.

Well before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, each of us had a personal threshold for the perceived harmfulness of objects. We all have friends who just couldn’t go anywhere without a bottle of sanitizer…

Everything but the Oink…

The issue of driver state monitoring is not new, indeed it has been debated for about 20 years. In its nature itself, it supposes a central role for the driver, in order to assess his/her state and inform, when distracted or sleepy, that he/she is not in the position to drive safely…

Smart mobility and health emergency: towards a new era?

According to the forecasts outlined by the main players in the sector, 2020 should have opened a decade of significant investments aimed at implementing a fast transition from the traditional mobility model — characterized during the entire twentieth century by the tension between…

RE:Design of Everyday HMIs

That’s what my inner voice said to me as I was approaching an ATM a few days ago after Italy’s lockdown had been lifted. It was a kind of unexpected awareness. While I was managing an improvised strategy to reduce risk in front of such a public device (using the smallest area of my fingertip), I was wondering how I should ev…

About

With 15 years of experience in Human Machine Interface, and more than 90 highly skilled people on board. RE:Lab is a huge community of interactive practitioners. As we started as a University spin-off, we keep a strong focus on research and flexibility, being open and ready to provide interactions wherever needed and valuable. The idea we have is that user experience should be concrete experience: our interactions eventually work in the real world, either as a prototype and real products. From drawing to drive we say, and ready to share the driving with you.
